Hi, I’m Gemma.
I’m a mum of three, and our family chose home education. For us, learning happens with tutors, around the kitchen table, on days out and through the things our children want to understand. Some days that means practising words. On others, a simple question leads us somewhere completely unexpected.
What we wanted was a way to bring those moments together. A place where a parent could see what a tutor had been working on, save a piece of work, remember a conversation from a day out, and help a child follow a new interest without starting from scratch every time.
That is the purpose of Learn with Susie. Children can read, answer questions, explore outside and share what they discover. Parents can prepare the next step, work with more than one tutor and build a record of learning that reflects life beyond a worksheet.
I’m not a teacher, and this project does not ask every family to learn in the same way. We are building the tools we wanted for our own home-education journey: practical, encouraging and flexible enough to fit around real family life.
Curiosity counts, even without a quiz.
A child who wants to read about volcanoes should be able to enjoy that reading. Not every discovery needs a score. Our reading journal distinguishes opening a topic from telling us it has been read, while questions and reviewed work provide different kinds of evidence.
Useful technology. Thoughtful human decisions.
AI helps turn general educational topics into interesting reading, activities and questions, and gives new content a second check. It can still make mistakes. The parent reviews what is shared with their child and decides what is right for them.
Photo answers are checked by the parent, or by a tutor the parent has explicitly allowed. This is a deliberate privacy choice: a photo can reveal a face, a home, a school name or more about a child than anyone intended. Children’s exploring photos stay in the private learning system instead of being sent to OpenAI for marking.
Written learning records and family reports also stay in the system. Marking choices uses a checked answer key, and open observations are reviewed by a grown-up. Keeping a person involved protects privacy and makes room for the context that a score can miss.
A record you can be proud to share.
The education report brings together recorded learning, reading interests, reviewed work, visits, calendar activities and approved tutor observations. You choose the dates, add your own perspective and check the wording before exporting it. It is your account of your child’s learning, supported by evidence—not a promise of an official outcome.
We want Learn with Susie to make the practical side of home education easier, leaving more room for the discoveries that make it worthwhile.
